Champions League review - Weds 16th Mar

Chelsea progressed to the Champions League quarter-finals with a goalless draw against Copenhagen.

The Blues headed into the tie with the Danish champions boasting a 2-0 lead but fluffed a flurry of chances to secure victory in the round of 16 second-leg tie.

resolute defending

Carlo Ancelotti's men rained in shots on the Copenhagen goal throughout the tie, but John Obi Mikel's header against the crossbar was the closest they came at Stamford Bridge.

Ashley Cole, Didier Drogba, Yury Zhirkov and Nicolas Anelka were all thwarted either by goalkeeper Johan Wiland or poor finishing.

The visitors also rattled the woodwork through Dame N'Doye's stupendous free-kick, although resolute defending by the Londoners kept them at bay.

Bryan Robson faces cancer battle

Manchester United legend Bryan Robson has undergone surgery for throat cancer.

Robson was in Bangkok when he had the operation on 3rd March and United have said specialists are optimistic about the chances of a full recovery.

"Bryan Robson underwent an operation to remove a tumour from his throat on 3rd March, 2011 in a hospital in Bangkok," a Manchester United club statement read.

"The laboratory report revealed a cancerous tumour, which will need further treatment. The oncologist is confident that the condition is treatable."

The former Manchester United skipper is currently combining his work as a United ambassador with coaching the Thailand national team.

The statement continued: "At this moment Bryan is fine to continue with his role as Thailand coach and his role as ambassador of Manchester United.

"Bryan and his family have requested that he can continue with his treatment in private and ask that their privacy is respected."

Kickz awards 2011

The third annual Kickz awards have recognised some of those who have made the project so successful.Onlinebingo SE

The glittering ceremony highlighted some inspirational stories of teenagers, professional football club coaches, police and local authority staff who have gone beyond the call of duty to make their communities safer and transform young peoples' lives.

Kickz sees Premier League clubs - along with more in the Football League - work with their local police forces to engage with young people in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the country.

The project is designed to reduce crime by giving disadvantaged youngsters purpose and pride through football coaching schemes in inner city areas - usually at times when street crime is most rife.

lavish event

From an initial pilot scheme five years ago, it has grown beyond all recognition. Now there are 112 projects nationwide, engaging with 45,000 young people whose lives have been changed for the better.

Currently 42 clubs are signed up, including 19 from the Barclays Premier League with Blackpool due to complete the set next season.

Kickz relies heavily on volunteer coaches who work closely with the police and youngsters and the latest awards ceremony was a chance to reward those who have shone the brightest over the past year.

The awards ceremony was held outside London for the first time with Villa Park playing host to a lavish event.

It kicked off with a performance by Manchester United Kickz M15 Drama Group and there was further entertainment from Aston Villa Kickz Cloud Breakerz, Sheffield United Kickz Street Dance Crew and Manchester City Kickz Connect 4.

And up-and-coming music star Talay Riley treated the audience to a three-song set.

fantastic event

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said: "It was a fantastic event, the best yet. It was great having music and entertainment which added much more energy.

"And of course it was fantastic to see so many young people whose lives have been changed by Kickz which has taken off more than we could have ever expected.

"It stemmed from discussions about the cost of policing matches. We argued that the value of clubs to their local community was far higher than the police estimated so we decided to work together to make a real impact.

"From a simple initial idea, Kickz has grown enormously. There are now 112 projects run by 42 clubs and involving 45,000 youngsters.

Hitzlsperger urges caution

West Ham United midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger has urged his team-mates not to rest on their laurels.

The German international has helped to spark something of a revival since recovering from a long lay-off.

He joined the Hammers from Lazio in the summer but did not make his debut until February due to a longstanding thigh injury .

Hitzlsperger's first appearance came in the 5-1 FA Cup fifth-round demolition of Burnley, before helping West Ham to consecutive Barclays Premier League victories over Liverpool and Stoke City.

The 28-year-old has netted twice in his first three matches and has become a key part of Avram Grant's side, whose recent form has propelled them out of the relegation zone.

good atmosphere

While Hitzlsperger admits he is delighted to be playing again, West Ham still linger dangerously close to the precipice and he knows there are plenty of hurdles still to overcome.

"I'm enjoying being back playing again," he said. "That's three games and three wins, so what more could I ask for?

"I've scored again on Saturday and it's a pure joy being out there. The fans are behind us and there is a very good atmosphere.

"We're in a difficult phase at the moment, but we seem to be handling the pressure very well.

"The business is not finished yet, though. There is a long way to go and we're looking forward to it."

Cech relishing life at Chelsea

Chelsea keeper Petr Cech admits he is more than happy with life at the club after making his 300th appearance for the Blues.

Cech made his landmark appearance as he helped the Blues claim a 3-1 win at Blackpool on Monday.

The Czech Republic international says he is enjoying life at Stamford Bridge - although he admitted that was as long as they remained one of the world's top clubs.

"It's true. I am happy at Chelsea and have no reason to change anything," he said.

"As long as they are one of the world's best clubs and as long as they want me to play for them, I will be happy to stay."

third spot

Cech is delighted to have played 300 matches for Chelsea, adding: "It is a nice feeling to have played in so many games for one of the world's best clubs.

"It has taken me seven years to achieve that and who knows what is going to be seven years later. I will be 35 then.

"If I manage to experience another seven years on the top level of football and another 300 fixtures, I will be happy."

Cech also feels that Chelsea's title hopes have been very much revived in recent weeks following their recent wins over Manchester United and Blackpool.

"Step by step we are getting back where we belong," he said. "In the next round we host Manchester City and if we beat them we will be in third spot.

"We have one game in hand over United, we are to play against them once more, so anything can happen. This win has provided us with some sort of chance if they keep on dropping points and we keep winning."

Szczesny suffers dislocated finger

Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny suffered a dislocated finger in the Champions League defeat by Barcelona.

Szczesny was hurt saving Dani Alves' 16th-minute free-kick and left the pitch a couple of minutes later after receiving treatment.

Manuel Almunia replaced him and went on to make some eye-catching saves, but manager Arsene Wenger will hope his first-choice keeper will be able to play some part in the Barclays Premier League run-in.

The Gunners lost 3-1 on the night and 4-3 on aggregate to Barca.

The Gunners must wait for the results of medical tests before determining the likely duration of the young Pole's absence from first-team duty, as Wenger confirmed after the match.

emergency loan

"It's a dislocated finger," said the Frenchman. "We have to check the tendon to see how much treatment it will need. We don't know yet."

The injury is a particular concern for Wenger given that Szczesny's compatriot Lukasz Fabianski has been ruled out for the rest of the season following shoulder surgery - an injury that arose from saving Szczesny's shot in a pre-match warm-up.

In addition, Vito Mannone has been troubled by a thigh injury while on loan at Hull, which may leave Wenger to draw on inexperienced young professionals or enter the emergency loan market should Szczesny be sidelined for a lengthy period.

Aurelio blow for Liverpool

Liverpool defender Fabio Aurelio will be out of action for up to a month with a hamstring injury.

The full-back picked up the knock during Sunday's victory over Manchester United.

The Brazilian limped off only 24 minutes into the 3-1 win at Anfield and the club have now confirmed he has suffered a tear to the muscle.

Aurelio has been troubled by a series of niggling injuries this season and had only just returned from an adductor problem.

Liverpool's head of sports medicine and sports science, Dr Peter Brukner, told the official club website: "He's got a significant hamstring injury.

"Unfortunately his body lets him down. He always play well when he's fit. We've been managing him carefully because he's not been playing twice in a week, but this just came out of the blue.

"He had a minor adductor strain a few weeks before that. We rehabilitated him and he trained all week with no problems at all.

"He's obviously very down. It was a sad sight to see him walking off the pitch. He's frustrated because he was playing well on Sunday. He was looking forward to getting a run of games but it wasn't to be."

unusual spot

Dr Brukner also revealed central defender Daniel Agger is unlikely to recover from a knee injury in time for Thursday's Europa League tie with Braga.

He said: "Daniel had a nasty kick on a joint to the side of his knee. It's an unusual spot to get an injury. They take time and he's a bit of a slow healer.

"He's still not 100 per cent so we'll have to see if he's fit for the game this week. But it's more likely to be the following week."

Martin Kelly, who has a similar hamstring injury to Aurelio's, and Jonjo Shelvey (knee) will definitely miss the trip to Portugal.

Henderson happy with Black Cats

Sunderland midfielder Jordan Henderson has no intention of leaving the club during the summer.

The 20-year-old's blossoming reputation, fuelled by a first senior England cap, has alerted potential suitors to his talent with Manchester United rumoured to be among those monitoring his situation.

However, amid speculation that a deal has already been done - something manager Steve Bruce has dismissed - Henderson has expressed his desire to remain with his home-town club.

keep improving

He said: "I do feel I have improved this season. I'm a better player than I was 12 months ago.

"It has been another great season for me. I have had some ups and downs along the way, but it's all part of my development. I have coped okay with the second season thing.

"I'm improving every day, that is what I'm aiming to do. I'm enjoying myself at Sunderland, I'm not looking to leave.

"I'm playing every week in the Premier League and that's all I have ever dreamed of doing.

"I'm young and I'm playing for Sunderland. It's something I love doing. I just want to keep doing that, keep improving, keep getting better as a player."

Henderson was catapulted into the first-team picture after impressing Bruce in training during the first few weeks of the then new boss' time on Wearside.

He has been virtually ever-present since forcing his way into the starting line-up, and while his manager admits there have been times when he might have been rested for his own sake had injuries not taken their toll on the squad, he remains a key man.

News in Brief - Weds 9th Mar

A review of the news from around the grounds of each Barclays Premier League club.

Arsenal

Arsenal Gael Clichy says he will wait until the end of the season before discussing a new contract at Emirates Stadium. Clichy's current deal expires in 2012 and the France international has been a mainstay of Arsene Wenger's side in recent seasons. He has made in excess of 250 appearances for the Gunners, but he is happy to wait to hold talks over a contract extension during the club's battle for success. "Will I prolong my contract? I don't know and I don't think about it," Clichy said. "The season is still long. I will have time to think about it in the summer."

Aston Villa

Aston Villa Manager Gerard Houllier is focusing on survival first before setting his sights higher. Villa are still on the fringe of one of the closest relegation battles for years and Houllier said: "It is going to be tight right to the end of the season. Every team from 35 points down to the bottom has got to work hard for the future. Every game is important. What is important is to play in the Premier League first and, in the future, the Champions League. That is the aim. That is the priority."

Birmingham City

Birmingham City Birmingham are confident they will meet the financial criteria which will enable them to compete in Europe next season after their Carling Cup triumph. There were weekend reports City may not be able to compete in the Europa League unless they can assure the Premier League, UEFA and the Football Association their financial future is secure. But Blues acting chairman Peter Pannu told the club's official website: "Birmingham City FC is in credit with their bankers and there is no financial impediment to its operations. We will have no problem securing UEFA licence approval (to play in Europe) for which the club had already filed the papers." A statement by Birmingham International Holdings - the club's parent company - to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange revealed Blues and other Hong Kong-based business had total debts in excess of £29m. It also emerged last week that owner Carson Yeung has put some of his own properties up as collateral for a multi-million pound loan. This would be used to "provide sufficient financial resources" to allow the business to continue "without significant curtailment of its operation". But Pannu told City's official website: "It is important to note that Birmingham City (the football club) is a separate corporate entity from BIHL (a listed company in Hong Kong). Although a distant subsidiary, Birmingham City FC's accounts are separate and it operates on its own financial basis. As for Birmingham International Holdings Limited, the financial support by a major shareholder is a common occurrence and there is no cause for concern or any direct links to Birmingham City FC's well being."

Blackburn Rovers

Blackburn Rovers Blackburn Rovers' owners have insisted there is "absolutely no truth" in rumours that manager Steve Kean is under pressure. Speculation mounted about the Scot's position over the weekend after Rovers were beaten 3-2 by Fulham on Saturday, their fifth defeat in sixth matches. The only Barclays Premier League point they have picked up during that time came from a goalless draw with Newcastle United and the run has seen Blackburn drop to within two points of the relegation zone. Chairman Anuradha Desai issued a statement on the club website which read: "I do not know the source of these rumours but I would like to clarify that there is absolutely no truth in these reports. I would like to put on record that we have a contract with Steve Kean and he will continue in his present position with the club. There is no question of the manager being changed."

Blackpool

Blackpool FC Ian Holloway says he is still loving his first season of top-flight management - even if it has left him looking "haggard and jaded". Their form has stuttered somewhat since 1st January, with only two wins - albeit against Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur - recorded from 12 fixtures. There have been plenty of highs and lows for Blackpool in the intervening months and Holloway has described the experience as a "scary" rollercoaster ride - but one which he continues to enjoy as much as ever. "We've had almost a full season in the Premier League," Holloway said. "I look haggard and jaded but I'm loving every minute of it. It has been absolutely fantastic and I'm proud of how we've tried to acquit ourselves. Some days it has gone horribly wrong, but I've kept my dignity, kept smiling. We are nowhere near as low as we should be - we should be off the chart, halfway up in the Championship. That's the truth, but we are riding this bubble of enthusiasm."

Bolton Wanderers

Bolton Wanderers Ricardo Gardner has joined Championship strugglers Preston North End on a one-month loan deal. The Jamaican winger has returned to fitness after missing nearly all of the season with a knee injury and will link up again with former Trotters assistant manager Phil Brown, now in charge of the Lilywhites. Bolton manager Owen Coyle said: "Ricardo has worked really hard to recover from his injury and get himself back up to speed and Preston presents an opportunity for him to sharpen up his match fitness." Gardner has made more than 400 appearances for Bolton since joining the club in the summer of 1998 but his only outing this season came in the Carling Cup win over Southampton in August.

Chelsea

Chelsea Carlo Ancelotti is confident his side's wobble is now over after two wins in six days gave them an outside chance of retaining their Barclays Premier League title. The 3-1 victory at Blackpool was achieved without the Blues hitting anywhere near top form. But, unlike in the previous two months when they lost matches against the likes of Wolverhampton Wanderers and drew against Everton and Fulham, they never really looked like losing to the Seasiders. Two goals from Frank Lampard and one from John Terry ensured there were no slip-ups at Bloomfield Road, allowing the club to move within nine points of league leaders Manchester United with a match in hand. The two league wins came on the back of a Champions League victory over Copenhagen and Ancelotti now thinks his side have overcome their mid-season blip. "I think so. Now we have three games where we have played very well, taking good results," he said. "I think the moment is gone - finally."

Everton

Everton David Moyes has confirmed he will sit down with Sylvain Distin in the summer to discuss the defender's future at Everton. Distin has proved to be a reliable member of the back four since moving to Goodison Park from Portsmouth in August 2009, producing consistent performances and steering clear of injuries. The veteran Frenchman, 33, will still have a year left on his current contract at the end of the season but Moyes is already planning talks over a new deal. The Toffees manager has been delighted with the way Distin has settled into life at the club and has a lot of respect for his committed attitude. "It is something we will look at in the summer," Moyes said. "Sylvain has been great for us and the change after Joleon Lescott left has been relatively seamless. He's played all the games, trains all the time and that is a big thing. He takes a lot of pride in that and rightly so."

Fulham

Fulham  Goalkeeper Neil Etheridge has joined League One side Charlton on loan. The Philippines international has penned a one-month deal with Chris Powell's side, who moved for the stopper after injuries to Rob Elliot and Ross Worner. Etheridge has yet to feature for the Cottagers' first team but progressed to No.2 behind David Stockdale during Mark Schwarzer's participation in the Asia Cup 2011. The 21-year-old will stay at The Valley until April 5 and is eligible to feature in the Addicks' match against MK Dons on Tuesday.

Liverpool

Liverpool Luis Suarez has claimed there is more that Anfield fans can look forward to from him. The Uruguayan striker played a starring role in the Reds' 3-1 win over Manchester United but pledged the best is yet to come. With Liverpool out of the FA Cup and the player ineligible for the Europa League, his chances to play regularly are presently slim. "It is very difficult for me to play one week and then have to wait two for the next chance," he said. "I am playing one game and then there is not another game I can play for a long time, and so it is hard for me to get to the right level physically. I think it will take some time before the fans get the best of me. It is great for a new player to have the support of the public like I did (against United). It was fantastic."

Manchester City

Manchester City Kevin Keegan is convinced Manchester City will win silverware this season and would be "delighted" if they did. City face a crucial week in their quest to end a 35-year trophy drought. They travel to Ukraine on Wednesday ahead of the Europa League last 16 first leg meeting with Dynamo Kiev on Thursday. Then on Sunday Roberto Mancini's side have a home FA Cup quarter-final tie against Reading. Former City manager Keegan said: "I think they will win something this year, it might be the FA Cup, it might be the Europa League. The sooner you get a trophy, the quicker the pressure comes off. A lot of money is being spent, so you must win things. It doesn't make your job any easier just because someone gives you a lorry load of money. It just means you have a chance of winning something. The pressure is greater because of that. Once you win one thing, others come along. The first cup is like a magnet, it seems to attract all the other trophies. I am delighted for them. Of course you are going to get people who are envious and don't like the fact that a lot of money is being paid out. But that is the way Chelsea did it. While it would take others three or four years to do, City can manage it in two or three because of their finances."

Manchester United

Manchester United Dimitar Berbatov is baffled by Manchester United's indifferent form on the road and wants an improvement as the race for the Barclays Premier League title enters a crucial phase. The Bulgarian striker believes part of the problem stems from the fact so many teams are raising their game against the leaders. United suffered their third away league defeat on Sunday when they lost 3-1 at Liverpool. Yet at home Sir Alex Ferguson's side have been invincible with 40 points taken out of a possible 42. Berbatov said: "We haven't won as many games as we should have away from home, but that's not because we haven't tried to. We never go into a game looking for a draw or thinking we'd be happy with a point. We aim to win each game. The difficulty is that other teams lift their game when they play Manchester United. We're the biggest club, so it's only natural. I understand that. That makes our job harder, but that's not an excuse: we need to be better away from home. At Old Trafford, we're doing really well. We're entertaining the fans, we're scoring a lot of goals. The aim is to bring that to our away performances."

Newcastle United

Newcastle United FC Striker Shola Ameobi admits he has taken a 'big risk' by returning to action wearing a protective mask. Ameobi made his comeback from a month on the sidelines with a fractured cheekbone by appearing as a substitute in Saturday's 2-1 home defeat by Everton. The 29-year-old is trying to get used to wearing the mask, but acknowledged another knock to his face would leave the surgeon unable to operate. "I know I've taken a big risk because the surgeon has told me if it does go again he won't operate because it would be too dangerous," said Ameobi. "The mask is made of the material they use in bullet-proof glass and it's see-through so aesthetically it's not too bad. It is moulded to my face, but when you do move around and sweat that creates a bit of movement that ideally you wouldn't want. Having something on your face you're not used to is strange. It's not so much the fact it's there, it's making sure you don't think about it and just get on with it. Any little thing that distracts you like that will put you off your game, and it's trying to get over that mental hurdle and just dealing with it."

Stoke City

Stoke City Stoke are only four points from the Barclays Premier League relegation zone and six short of the likely 40-point safety mark with nine matches still to play. However, goalkeeper Asmir Begovic believes no-one in the Potters' camp is taking survival for granted. He said: "There are a lot of teams in it and we aren't safe by any means. We have to pick ourselves up and start picking up points fast to push away from the relegation zone and establish ourselves in the top half of the table."

Sunderland

Sunderland Sunderland have started talks with Steed Malbranque over a new contract to keep the experienced midfielder at the Stadium of Light. Malbranque has made over 100 appearances for the Black Cats since his move to Wearside in 2008 from Tottenham Hotspur. He has featured 29 times for Steve Bruce's side this season and is regarded as a key member of the Sunderland squad. The 31-year-old is now set to be rewarded with an extension in the North East after chairman Niall Quinn confirmed negotiations have started. "We have opened negotiations over a new contract with Steed," Quinn told the club's official website. "He is a great asset to the club."

Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur Tottenham Hotspur have signed a kit supplier deal worth up to £50m with Under Armour. The five-year agreement represents the American company's largest European team sponsorship and Press Association Sport understands it could be worth up to £10m-a-year to the club. Beginning with the 2012/13 season Under Armour, who currently supply the Wales national rugby team, will replace Puma in providing Tottenham's playing kit and training wear, as well as replica shirts. Speaking on the deal, Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy said: "We are delighted that Under Armour will become our new technical partner from 2012 onwards. They are an extremely ambitious brand with global aspirations, making them ideal partners for Tottenham Hotspur."

West Bromwich Albion

West Bromwich Albion FC Paul Scharner claims West Brom's recent revival is down to Roy Hodgson restoring belief to the camp. The Baggies remain firmly locked in a Barclays Premier League relegation battle, but have cause for optimism after finding form of late. Just one defeat has been suffered in their last six top flight fixtures, suggesting they have the stomach for a fight. With only two points keeping them clear of the drop zone they cannot afford to relax, but they appear to be heading in the right direction. A 3-1 derby day victory over local rivals Birmingham City on Saturday has helped to lift spirits even further, with Hodgson's arrival as manager having the desired effect on results. The experienced coach was appointed as Roberto Di Matteo's successor in February and has set about altering the mindset of a squad that was teetering on the brink of collapse prior to his arrival. On Hodgson's impact, Scharner said: "Since he took over we have all spent half a day each week going over things. Everyone knows the systems, tactics and what their job is. Roy has brought some belief back to the team."

West Ham United

West Ham United Much of West Ham's recent change in fortunes has been due to the midfield triumvirate of Thomas Hitzlsperger, Scott Parker and Mark Noble. Speaking on their understanding, Hitzlsperger said: "I think there is a very good understanding, even though we haven't played many games with each other. All three of us in midfield like to have many touches of the ball and to change our positions and be creative."

Wigan Athletic

Wigan Athletic Conor Sammon believes the Latics can drag themselves from the foot of the Barclays Premier League table and win their fight for survival. The Republic of Ireland Under-21 made his debut from the bench in the 1-0 defeat by Manchester City on Saturday but almost grabbed an equaliser in stoppage time. Now, the Dublin-born striker, who joined Wigan Athletic from Kilmarnock in January, insists he can help to save the club from relegation. "It's definitely possible to stay up," he said. "We've got a confident bunch of lads here at the club and we take it one game at a time. I'm very confident I can help the team and provide some goals, and if I can do that I'll be delighted. I'm also very focused on the job in hand and I am eager to help the team progress up the league table. When you get an opportunity off the bench it's a great chance to show what you can do and stake a claim for a permanent place, and I'm looking forward to the next game when I can hopefully I keep pushing. We definitely have enough quality and fight in this side and I believe we can prove that by turning our good performances into positive results."

Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolverhampton Wanderers Mick McCarthy believes Kevin Doyle's two goals against Tottenham were a reward for his tireless efforts throughout the campaign. He said: "I'm thrilled for Doyley. He wants to score. It is all very well getting admiration from me and plaudits from everyone about the way he plays. He wants to score and he does get sick of hearing all that 'well done Doyley, you've done this and that.' He wants to score." Wolves will play only one match in the next month but McCarthy hopes it will allow his injured players to recover for the run-in. He said: "We can't do anything about it. Prior to the game, we lost Dave Edwards, Dave Jones and Ronald Zubar through injury. Maybe in the month, we will have a chance to get a couple back because it does knock a hole in the squad."

Champions League review - Tues 8th Mar

Ten man Arsenal were knocked out of the Champions League with a 4-3 aggregate defeat to Barcelona.

Swiss referee Massimo Busacca sent off striker Robin van Persie and awarded Barca a crucial penalty in an exhilarating final 45 minutes of their last-16 second leg at the Nou Camp.

With Arsenal holding a 2-1 lead from the first leg, Lionel Messi produced a brilliant late first-half leveller.

neat finish

Sergio Busquets' own goal restored Arsenal's lead only for Van Persie to be harshly dismissed for time-wasting.

Xavi's neat finish and a Messi spot-kick gave Barca a 3-1 win on the night and 4-3 aggregate success to end Arsenal's European campaign.

Edwards out for a month

Wolves midfielder David Edwards will be out of action for at least a month with a back injury.

The Wales international has suffered a stress reaction in his spine and now needs to rest before undergoing a scan.

Edwards has been dogged by various injury problems this season, including thigh and hamstring setbacks.

He impressed when he returned to action in the 4-0 win over Blackpool but missed the weekend draw with Tottenham Hotspur and now faces another spell on the sidelines.

more serious

The head of Wolves' medical department, Steve Kemp, said: "Dave complained of lower back stiffness after the Blackpool game.

"As a result, he had a scan which showed up the stress reaction in his lumbar spine.

"With these findings it's not worth risking him carrying on playing with the injury as it could develop into something more serious.

"It's actually fortunate we found the problem quite early, and we now intend to manage the injury by treating Dave over the next month after which we will re-assess."

Match preview - Weds 9th Mar

A look ahead to Wednesday's fixture in the Barclays Premier League.

Everton and Birmingham go head-to-head at Goodison Park on Wednesday.

This match was originally due to take place on Boxing Day, but was postponed due to an issue with frozen pipes in the Merseyside area after particularly cold weather on Christmas Day evening.

Having originally been rearranged for Wednesday 23rd February, it had to be reorganised yet again, due to Birmingham's involvement in the Carling Cup final.

survival bid

After their impressive win over Arsenal at Wembley, Alex McLeish's side turned their attentions back to the business of Barclays Premier League survival last weekend.

They were dealt a blow, slipping to a 3-1 defeat at home to relegation rivals and neighbours West Bromwich Albion.

Having fallen in to the danger zone, Blues will be desperate for their first win in three matches. With two fixtures in hand over most of the teams around them, the Goodison Park meeting could have a massive say in the outcome of Birmingham's survival bid.

Everton, meanwhile, appear to be sitting comfortably in mid-table. But appearances can be deceptive.

In tenth place, the Toffees are just six points clear of Birmingham in 18th. They are also just six points behind Liverpool in sixth spot, so a European place would not be out of the question if David Moyes' men could mount a sustained challenge in their remaining 10 matches.

When the two sides met at St Andrew's in October, the Toffees enjoyed a 2-0 away win, thanks to a strike from Tim Cahill and an own goal from Roger Johnson.

Birmingham have not won a league match at Everton since their 2-0 success in November 1957.

Zamora ready for Supersub role

Fulham striker Bobby Zamora does not expect to walk straight back into Mark Hughes' starting line-up.

Despite scoring his first goal since returning from a broken leg, last season's leading marksman knows he is not guaranteed to walk straight back into the side.

The England international, who came off the bench to slam home a decisive penalty in the 3-2 over Blackburn Rovers on Saturday, told the club's official website that the number of options available to Hughes mean that nobody is sure to start.

"There are so many attacking options now I don't expect to come back in," said Zamora. "I'm happy to play my part coming on off the bench."

top form

A recent run of good form has steered Fulham away from the relegation battle and Zamora feels that Hughes now has a squad brimming with quality players to select from in the closing weeks of the season.

"Just looking at the bench, it's frightening. The options are brilliant and I think anyone can go in and do a good job. You have to be on top form every week in training to be able to get in that starting eleven."

Zamora signed a new contract at Fulham back in September before breaking his leg the next day in a match against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It was initially feared that he would not play again this season but the ex-Tottenham Hotspur forward has made a strong recovery.

He is now in line to figure in the club's next Barclays Premier League match at Everton on Saturday 19th March.

Lucas hails Suarez impact

Midfielder Lucas Leiva believes Liverpool have found themselves a "game changer" in the form of Luis Suarez.

The Uruguay international has played only four matches since his £22.8m transfer from Ajax at the end of January, but already he has shown he could prove to be an incredibly shrewd purchase.

His Reds career got off to the perfect start when he came off the bench for his debut against Stoke City and scored within 15 minutes of taking the field.

However, he went up a notch against Manchester United on Sunday when, although Dirk Kuyt's hat-trick grabbed the headlines, the 24-year-old was the star performer with a hand in all three goals.

His contribution for the first, skipping past Rafael, Michael Carrick and Wes Brown before rolling the ball through goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar's legs for Kuyt to tap home had the mark of genius.

really happy

And Lucas believes the impact Suarez has already had, with the promise of better to come in the future, has helped erase the memory of Fernando Torres' departure to Chelsea for £50m - funds which were used to bring in the Uruguayan and club-record signing Andy Carroll.

"I don't think Liverpool would pay 25million euros for a bad footballer," joked the Brazil international, who enhanced his growing reputation with another composed display in central midfield against United.

"He has already settled and looks like he has been here for a long time.

"He is really happy and we have helped him to settle, especially outside of the training ground.

"You have to give him the confidence to show what he can do and he has already shown what he is capable of doing.

"We are happy because when you lose a striker like Fernando you expect to have another one.

"He is a fighter, he has a lot of quality, is very strong and quick and can change the game.

"What he did against United was good, especially the first goal, where he did a great job."

Kuyt calls for consistency

Forward Dirk Kuyt says Liverpool can compete with the best teams if they are more consistent.

The 3-1 victory over Manchester United, in which the Holland international scored his first Reds hat-trick, was their third successive home win over their arch-rivals.

In results between the current top four and Liverpool the Merseysiders' record is second only to Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

They have secured 10 points from six matches against United, Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea, while the Old Trafford club have taken 13 from a possible 21, including matches against Liverpool.

The reason Kenny Dalglish's team are six points off of the Champions League places and 18 adrift of league leaders United is their woeful record against clubs currently below them.

keep winning

Defeats to Blackpool (twice), Everton, Stoke City, Newcastle United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Blackburn Rovers and West Ham United have seriously damaged their campaign.

But in their remaining nine matches only three - Arsenal, City and Tottenham Hotspur (the latter two at home) - are against teams above them and Kuyt has called for an all-round improvement.

"We want to win every game, we want to go on a run," he said. "The aim for us is consistency. We have shown that we can compete with the best, but competing with the best is not enough to win things.

"We have beaten United, we have beaten Chelsea (twice) but we also want to beat the other teams as well. You need to win, with all respect, against the West Hams and the Wolves and the Blackpools.

"Everyone is working really hard every day to go forward, and hopefully we can show that West Ham (a 3-1 defeat) last week was a mistake and go on a run of winning games. That will be our motivation for the coming games.

"We all know getting into the top four will be really difficult, but Birmingham winning the Carling Cup means there will not be as many places in the Europa League for us to get, so we need to keep winning our games, and then we will see what happens."

News in Brief - Tues 8th Mar

A review of the news from around the grounds of each Barclays Premier League club.

Arsenal

Arsenal Robin van Persie has raised hopes of a shock early comeback from injury by making an unexpected return to training. Pictures released on the club's official website show Van Persie apparently participating in full training on Monday morning, less than a week after Arsene Wenger ruled him out for a month with knee ligament damage. Talksport report Van Persie was 'running and turning freely in a Monday morning session with an Arsenal fitness coach raising speculation of a return to action sooner than expected'.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa Gerard Houllier believes Aston Villa need a minimum of 10 more points to guarantee Barclays Premier League survival. Villa are three points above the relegation zone after again failing to hold onto a lead in the 3-2 defeat at Bolton Wanderers on Saturday. Houllier knows that inability to close out games has been the difference between challenging for a European spot and their current predicament. He said: "All games are important, we've only got 33 points and we've lost too many points on the way. We've lost something like 18 points when in front. Had we lost just half of those, we would be in a European spot at the moment. We are not safe. I keep my feet on the ground and we need 10 points minimum to be safe, I think." It is going to be tight right to the end of the season. Every team from 35 points down to the bottom has got to work hard for the future. Every game is important. What is important is to play in the Premier League first and, in the future, the Champions League. That is the aim. That is the priority."

Birmingham City

Birmingham City Manager Alex McLeish will let key midfielder Barry Ferguson decide whether to undergo an injection which could allow him to return to action quicker after suffering a broken rib. Ferguson picked up the injury in a challenge with Arsenal's Samir Nasri during the Carling Cup final. His influence was sorely missed during Saturday's 3-1 home defeat by West Bromwich Albion which pushed City back into the bottom three of the Barclays Premier League. But McLeish will put no pressure on Ferguson and allow him to make his mind up on whether to go under the needle and he said: "We all have key players. But I'm not going to force the player into doing it. His welfare comes first and it must come from him if he makes the decision to have the jab. Barry has had this before when I was at Rangers in a Scottish Cup final. Perhaps it was easier then, but there can be things done to alleviate it, in terms of an injection. Barry, the doctor and I were discussing it on Saturday because he hates missing matches. Of course, he is a key component in our games just like Cesc Fabregas is a talisman to Arsenal and Wayne Rooney for Manchester United."

Blackburn Rovers

Blackburn Rovers Steve Kean is staying calm over Blackburn Rovers' future amid rumours he is already heading for the exit door at Ewood Park. Rovers are currently just two points clear of the Barclays Premier League drop zone having suffered five defeats in their last six matches. Speculation has surfaced the club's owners Venky's could axe manager Kean less than two months after he was appointed on a two-year contract in place of the sacked Sam Allardyce. But despite Rovers' perilous position, Kean remains bullish over their chances of top-flight survival this term following Saturday's 3-2 defeat at Fulham. He said: "All we have to do is make sure we perform like this for the next nine games and we won't have a problem at all. It's the tightest relegation battle for a very long time and the bottom three will continue to change right to the end of the season."

Blackpool 1-3 Chelsea

Chelsea raised hopes of a belated push to defend their Barclays Premier League title with victory over Blackpool.

Frank Lampard scored twice after John Terry's opener to give Chelsea a 3-1 win.

The Stamford Bridge side's £50m striker Fernando Torres may have drawn a blank again but the two experienced England internationals ensured there was no upset.

Jason Puncheon hit a late consolation but Chelsea moved to within nine points of leaders Manchester United with a match in hand.

Bannan makes Leeds switch

Aston Villa midfielder Barry Bannan has joined Leeds United on loan until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old Scotland international will go straight into Simon Grayson's squad for Tuesday night's Championship match at Preston North End.

Grayson said: "Barry's a player we've been tracking for a while. Circumstances have now changed where Villa are in a position to let him join us and I'd like to thank them for agreeing to the move.

"He's had the opportunity to go to nearly every other team in the Championship so for him to come here makes it all the more pleasing.

"He's used to this division and he played a major part in Blackpool's run to get promoted last season, so he has experience and he fits the bill perfectly for us."

opportunities limited

Leeds have an option to extend the loan deal should they get to the Championship play-offs. However Villa will have a recall option after 28 days.

Bannan's first taste of senior football came in Villa's 2008-09 UEFA Cup campaign, when he featured against Hamburg and CSKA Moscow. But he had to wait until the opening day of the 2010/11 season before making his Barclays Premier League debut as a substitute against West Ham United.

A few days later he scored his first Villa goal against Rapid Vienna in the Europa League play-off first leg at the Gerhard Hanappi Stadium.

He was handed a brief autumn run in the first-team but has since found his senior opportunities limited by the return to fitness of Nigel Reo-Coker and Stiliyan Petrov as well as the arrival of Robert Pires and Jean II Makoun.

Bannan, who joins Villa team-mate Eric Lichaj at Elland Road, has enjoyed previous loan spells at Derby County and Blackpool, helping the Seasiders to the Barclays Premier League with a series of stand-out displays last season.

Cahill happy to prove a point

Bolton Wanderers defender Gary Cahill was delighted to finally show former club Aston Villa what they are missing.

Former Villa manager Martin O'Neill allowed the 25-year-old to depart the Midlands club for Bolton in a £5m deal back in 2008.

Ahead of Saturday's match Cahill had played five times against his old club with disappointing results, drawing one, losing four and conceding 15 goals.

But the England centre-half redeemed himself at the Reebok Stadium, scoring two goals in a man-of-the-match winning performance to inspire a 3-2 Trotters victory.

little knockback

He said: "I was keen to prove a point because the last few times I've played against them I've had absolute stinkers! So the tide had to turn for me.

"In the away game last season we lost 5-1 and it was probably my worst performance as a professional. To do it at Villa Park was a big blow.

"So I really did feel I had something to prove. When you get a little knockback in your career, it gives you something to strive for.

"In the back of your mind you're always thinking 'I'll show you'.

"I know now that me leaving was the best thing. Martin O'Neill let me go and he obviously felt that was the right thing at the time. But you go on and want to prove people wrong."

Cattermole close to training return

Steve Bruce hopes Sunderland's Lee Cattermole will return to full training this week on his comeback from injury.

The 22-year-old midfielder has not played since the 2-0 home defeat by Blackpool on 28th December because of a back problem which required complete rest.

Bruce said: "He's training and we hope by the middle of this week that he's joining in."

Specialists warned Cattermole that the injury could develop into a stress fracture if he did not sit out and, having already seen his captain miss a significant proportion of his time on Wearside because of fitness concerns, Bruce acted on that advice.

physically working

However, the £6m signing from Wigan Athletic has now resumed light training and is expected to step up his work over the next few days to hand his manager a boost in the face of continuing injury problems.

Bruce continued: "He's out there training and physically working - but he has been out 10 weeks as well now.

"It doesn't get any better, week in, week out, to be honest."

As Cattermole prepared to return to full training, keeper Craig Gordon was heading for Sweden to consult a specialist over his knee injury.

The 28-year-old Scotland international was an unused substitute for Saturday's 0-0 Barclays Premier League draw at Arsenal, the second successive match for which he has provided the back-up to Belgian Simon Mignolet.

However, Bruce revealed on Thursday that Gordon would be in Scandinavia on Monday to try to get to the bottom of the problem which forced him to return early from international duty last month.

Holloway eyes another upset

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway believes his side can pull off another famous victory when they take on Chelsea.

The Seasiders have already recorded impressive home wins over Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur since the turn of the year, but with only two points currently separating them from the Barclays Premier League relegation zone, they could do with something similar against the Blues at Bloomfield Road.

Following the 3-1 triumph against Spurs on 22nd February, Holloway's team were swiftly brought down to earth when they were hammered 4-0 at Wolverhampton Wanderers four days later - the same score by which they were defeated at Stamford Bridge back in September.

Bouncing back with a win over the champions on Monday night looks a tall order, but Holloway is convinced his players have it in them to upset the odds once again.

tad fortunate

"We've talked about what went wrong at their (Chelsea's) place, and spoken about Wolves very quickly and then moved on because it is important not to dwell on things," Holloway said.

"You can only do something about the next one and that is something we have handled really well.

"What we need is a response and who's to say we can't do to Chelsea what we did to Tottenham.

"If you look at the Tottenham game they had more possession, double the shots, but our finishing was lethal on the day.

"We need things to go our way and they will have to go better than they have ever to get three points off Chelsea.

"I believe we can get three points but we are going to have to be a tad fortunate and play the best we have played."

Blackpool will be without their top-scorer DJ Campbell and captain Charlie Adam for the contest.

Campbell begins a three-match suspension after he was sent off at Wolves, while Adam serves the second of his two-match ban for picking up 10 yellow cards this season.

Defender Stephen Crainey, who has not made a first-team appearance since 22nd January due to an ankle injury, is in line to return against the Blues and midfielder Elliot Grandin, absent for the last two matches with a hamstring problem, has an outside chance of being involved.

However, the match will come too soon for Gary Taylor-Fletcher (hamstring) and Matt Gilks (knee).

Barclays Premier League in numbers

We look back at the latest weekend of the Barclays Premier League season with some key facts and figures.

2 - Damien Duff's double against Blackburn Rovers was his first brace in a Premier League match since he netted twice for Blackburn in the 3-0 win against West Ham United in December 1997.

3 - Birmingham City conceded three league goals at St Andrew's for only the second time in six years as they went down 3-1 at home to West Bromwich Albion.

5 - Blackburn Rovers have now lost their last five away matches following their 3-2 defeat at Fulham.

6 - Stoke City's 3-0 defeat at West Ham United was their sixth successive reverse on the road.

7 - Dirk Kuyt's hat-trick in Liverpool's 3-1 win against Manchester United came from a combined distance of just seven yards.

club record

8 - Only eight goals have been scored in the last seven Barclays Premier League meetings between Arsenal and Sunderland who drew 0-0 at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

9 - Everton's 2-1 win at Newcastle United was their first success in nine visits to St James' Park.

13 - Fulham have taken 13 points from a possible 15 at Craven Cottage to pull clear of the drop zone.

14 - Newcastle United have now failed to win in 14 matches kicking off at 3pm on a Saturday since August 2008.

15 - Aston Villa have dropped 15 points from winning positions in away matches this season, the worst record in the Barclays Premier League.

Barclays Community Sports Award - Jan

Bradford based charity One in a Million has been named as the Barclays Community Sports Award winner for January.

The award was made by Barclays Spaces for Sports, the Premier League's Creating Chances programme and the Football Foundation.

The charity is dedicated to helping disadvantaged children in the local community through sporting activities and informal education, preventing crime and anti-social behavior while promoting healthy living and community cohesion.

Co-founded by Bradford City Assistant Manager Wayne Jacobs, the charity is based at the home of Bradford City FC and among other activities provides a Twilight Football League that runs on Friday nights at five different locations across the city.

After the five-a-side matches have taken place, each team has a mentor that speaks about various issues including gang crime, vandalism or alcohol abuse. The scheme not only keeps young people off the streets at night but attempts to educate them about these important issues.

great work

The charity was presented with the Barclays Community Sports Award by former England defender and judging panel member Gareth Southgate, who said: "One in a Million is a truly unique scheme that engages young people through sport while educating them on important issues.

"The West Yorkshire police have noticed a huge reduction in local crime while the scheme has been in existence which is testament to the fantastic and important work the charity is doing."

Charity fundraiser Sean Rutherford commented: "It is fantastic to receive this award in recognition of the important work that One in a Million does with disadvantaged young people across Bradford.

"A huge thanks to Barclays Spaces for Sports, the Premier League's Creating Chances programme and the Football Foundation for their support. This money will be vital in ensuring that One in a Million can continue their great work across the region."

Each monthly winner receives £1,000 for their group or organisation, a limited edition trophy and will be entered into the end of season award to win a further £5,000, all donated by Barclays Spaces for Sports. The end of season award winner will also receive a VIP trip to London to receive their award from Gareth Southgate.

Silva: We're getting better

David Silva has warned Manchester City's top-four rivals there is much more to come from the Blues.

City closed to within seven points of leaders Manchester United thanks to their 1-0 win over Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

Now they can forget about their pursuit of a Champions League place for a couple of weeks as they attempt to secure a passage into the Europa League quarter-finals by beating Dynamo Kiev and reach their first FA Cup semi-final in 30 years by overcoming Reading next Sunday.

proper side

And Silva is confident City are only taking the first steps on the path to glory.

"There is a lot more to come," said the Spain international.

"It is difficult because it has been a lot of people's first season here. It is hard to gel and come together as a unit in that short space of time.

"But we have proved we are becoming more of a proper side and the more we play together the better we will become."

Silva certainly has no intention of choosing which competition he would prefer to win.

Given the squad that will be at Roberto Mancini's disposal when everyone is fit, the former Valencia man sees no reason to.

"Let's hope we can get both," he said.

"We are in a good league position now and still alive in the two cup competitions.

"Let's hope we can keep doing this and stay in the top four and at least guarantee the Champions League next season."

Match preview - Mon 7th Mar

A look ahead to Monday's fixture in the Barclays Premier League.

Chelsea visit Blackpool in the day's only Barclays Premier League fixture.

Carlo Ancelotti's side rekindled their flagging title hopes by beating leaders Manchester United and now hope to build on that at Bloomfield Road.

However the Seasiders are desperate to bounce back after their crushing 4-0 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Blackpool v Chelsea

Chelsea have taken seven points from a possible nine on the road while Ian Holloway's men have won one and drawn one in front of their own fans since halting a run of three successive home defeats.

The champions have already beaten Blackpool this season, winning 4-0 at Stamford Bridge in September with first-half goals by Salomon Kalou, Florent Malouda (2) and and own goal by Ian Evatt.

The Tangerines have not beaten Chelsea in the league at Bloomfield Road since their 3-2 success in the old First Division in April 1965.

Since then the Blues have won all seven visits in all competitions.

Ancelotti reveals confidence problems

Carlo Ancelotti admits there was a confidence problem at Chelsea during their worst run for almost 15 years.

And the Blues manager believes last week's victory over Manchester United could be what finally resurrects his side's stuttering season.

Ancelotti has suggested he deliberately played down the effect Chelsea's alarming pre-Christmas slump had on his players, probably to avoid shattering their fragile confidence.

But in the wake of Tuesday night's comeback against United, the Italian felt it was time to acknowledge just how low spirits had sunk at Stamford Bridge.

"A lot of times in the past, I've said the atmosphere is good," he said.

"Sometimes it wasn't really good because the players had more difficulties to train, with less confidence. Now the confidence has improved with the results.

"The atmosphere is really good. The players are training well with confidence and ability, so I have confidence in the future."

He added: "When you win against United, it means you're good enough to play against stronger teams.

"So this result obviously improves your confidence."

winning run

However, Chelsea have endured more than one false dawn this season, including December's victory over Bolton Wanderers and January's hat-trick of Barclays Premier League victories, which were followed by another demoralising defeat to Liverpool.

"Everyone had confidence going into that Liverpool game, but we lost it and the confidence went down," said Ancelotti, who believes failure to beat United might have proved fatal.

"If we were not able to win this game, it could have been a problem in the future."

Anything other than a victory would have all but ended Chelsea's faint hopes of retaining the Barclays Premier League title, as well as casting doubt on their ability to win the Champions League.

Ancelotti accepts they must now go on a winning run, starting with Monday night's match at Blackpool, who he is refusing to take lightly.

"It's the wrong way to prepare by thinking it will be easier against Blackpool than United," Ancelotti said.

"We have to be more in focus against them than against United.

feel good

"It's easy to stay focused against United because there's so much attention on the game, and a lot of pressure.

"There is less pressure against Blackpool, so my aim is to maintain their focus."

Ancelotti has already decided whether to recall Didier Drogba for Monday's match, with the striker having spent the last two fixtures on the bench.

The Italian refused to reveal whether Drogba would start but did confirm he had met with owner Roman Abramovich in the wake of Tuesday's match against United.

Joking "it was a good time" for Abramovich to pay a visit, he added: "He was happy with the performance."

Ancelotti is also looking happier himself than in recent weeks.

He added: "When I wake up in the morning I'm always happy, just because I wake up. I feel good."

Dalglish cautious despite win

Manager Kenny Dalglish admits Liverpool have some way still to go before they can challenge for the title.

The Reds' 3-1 win over their arch-rivals Manchester United at Anfield dealt a blow to the Old Trafford club's bid for a record-breaking 19th championship, a figure which would take them past the Merseysiders' tally.

And despite the win the Liverpool manager accepts there is plenty of work still to do.

not finished

"The closer you get to the top the more difficult it is to close the gap," he said.

"Moving from 20th to sixth is not as big a problem as moving from two to one so the higher you go the more difficult the step up is.

"United are a great benchmark but our season is not finished.

"We got our reward for the victory in three points in the league but we just want to keep going and get as many as we possibly can.

"The owners (Americans Fenway Sports Group) are determined to move the club forward within reason, whatever that is going to be they will do their best to provide it.

"But the players who played there did not do themselves any harm in terms of being part of the club going forward."

News in Brief - Mon 7th Mar

A review of the news from around the grounds of each Barclays Premier League club.

Arsenal

Arsenal Jack Wilshere has handed Arsenal a boost ahead of Tuesday's trip to Barcelona by declaring himself fit to play. Gunners manager Arsene Wenger cast doubt over whether the teenage midfielder would feature in the crucial UEFA Champions League tie after revealing he would miss training on Sunday with an ankle knock picked up against Sunderland. But Wilshere has since revealed the problem is not serious and that he will be available for the second leg of the last-16 tie at Camp Nou. The 19-year-old England international said on his Twitter account: "Just to let you know i am not injured and if selected will be fit to face Barca! Few kicks but nothing too bad!"

Aston Villa

Aston Villa Midfielder Stephen Ireland has moved to put the record straight on quotes attributed to him in Friday's newspapers regarding his parent club, Aston Villa, and his hometown in Ireland. Ireland, currently on loan at Newcastle United, was reported to have made derogatory comments regarding Villa and the cities of Birmingham and Cork. However, having read the papers, Ireland was upset with the nature of the comments and felt the opinions that he aired during the interview were taken completely out of context. "I'm upset with what has been printed because I feel like I've been portrayed in the wrong way," Ireland said. "I was misquoted and things have been blown way out of proportion. That is the reason why I feel like I needed to say something because the quotes are very unfair. What I said during the interview has been twisted to sound particularly blunt and a lot of what was written about my hometown of Cork - which me and my family visit regularly - was just plain ridiculous. The comments regarding Birmingham were also taken way out of context as I had only been at Villa a few months and didn't even live there so I have no idea what Birmingham is like to live in and everyone I have met from Birmingham has been nice, my girlfriend's father is from Birmingham so why would I say that, it's just crazy. I can only apologise if anyone was offended, but the way the interview was written made me sound very harsh, and I am not that kind of person."

Birmingham City

Birmingham City Carling Cup winners Birmingham have been charged by the Football Association with failing to keep supporters off the pitch following their quarter-final victory over Aston Villa. More than 1,000 Birmingham supporters invaded the pitch after their side's 2-1 win at St Andrew's. The FA have described the incidents as "serious crowd disturbances" and have given Birmingham until Friday 11th March to respond. Birmingham said in a statement they "would like to thank the FA for their assistance and communication prior to and during the investigation".

Chelsea youngsters in finals

Four youngsters representing Chelsea competed in the Fred Perry Table Tennis Urban Cup finals.

The four young people who qualified to play for Chelsea FC in the Urban Cup finals at London's Business Design Centrewere Ben Clifford, Nathan Blore, Emily Wood and Sarah Harris.

In an initiative launched by the Premier League and Fred Perry that has seen 100,000 girls and boys aged 11-14 try table tennis over the past three months, the four youngsters had reached the final 80 competitors in the country.

Emily and Sarah said: "We had never played Table Tennis before the Premier League 4 Sport Project so to get to an event like this and play against all other clubs is something we never thought would have happened."

For the boys' title, Blackburn Rovers edged out Manchester United and in the girls' division, Portsmouth took first place, with Manchester United finishing second. In the overall combined boys and girls table, however, the Manchester United quartet were victorious and took home the Fred Perry Urban Cup.

incredible achievement

The Fred Perry Urban Cup, led by iconic sports fashion label Fred Perry in partnership with the Premier League 4 Sport (PL4S) programme, the English Table Tennis Association (ETTA) and Sport England's Sportsmatch initiative, saw all 20 Premier League clubs link with regional table tennis community clubs to encourage and inspire youngsters to get involved in table tennis.

More than100,000 youngsters aged 11-14 across the country were given the chance to try their hand at the sport over the past three months, with four youngsters from each Premier League club - two girls and two boys - qualifying to represent their team at the Urban Cup finals.
